How to Grow Your Beauty Business

As your beauty business hype girl, I’m here to tell you it’s time to stop dreaming about how to grow your independent beauty business and actually make it happen!  I know it can feel overwhelming with not knowing where to start, but trust me, it’s worth it to take that first step to grow your independent beauty business ✨

Let’s break down some quick, actionable tips that will help you grow your business, attract new clients, and build a brand that’s authentic to you. Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned stylist looking to niche down, these strategies have your back!

1. Grow Your Personal Hairstylist Brand

First things first, your brand is everything! Clients don’t just come to you for a transformation; they’re looking for an experience. What makes you you? What sets you apart? Here are my top tips:

  • Define your vibe: Are you the queen of brunettes? Do you specialize in extensions? Make it known! Nobody should question what you’re passionate about.
  • Create a feeling: Think about how your salon looks and feels. Is it cozy and welcoming, or sleek and modern? Your brand should reflect your salon’s vibe.
  • Show your face: People love people. Don’t be afraid to show your personality on social media. Clients want to know the person behind the chair.

2. Leverage Social Media To Grow Your Beauty Business

Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are your besties when it comes to growing your hairstyling business. But, you absolutely need to use them strategically. Posting and ghosting isn’t going to attract clients

  • Post consistently: The algorithm loves it when you’re consistent! Posting regularly helps you stay top of mind.
  • Share your work: Before-and-after photos, transformation videos, and client testimonials are gold. Show off those amazing hair transformations!
  • Showcase who YOU are: This helps build trust with potential clients before they ever step in the door.
  • Engage with your audience: Comment, like, and respond to your followers. Build a community, not just a following. When people feel connected to you, they’re more likely to book with you.

Pro tip: Use local hashtags like #ColumbusHairstylist or #LosAngelesExtensions to attract clients searching for stylists in your area.

3. Create an Amazing Client Experience

Your clients deserve to feel like they’re getting a VIP experience every time they sit in your chair. When your clients feel like royalty, they’ll tell everyone they know about you. Client experience is a key part in how to grow your independent beauty business! Implement these systems immediately:

  • Consultations are key: Get to know your clients hair goals BEFORE they ever step in the door with a virtual consultation. This helps you decide if your skills are a good fit for their goals and allows you to properly prepare for the appointment
  • Go the extra mile: In today’s day and age, clients expect top tier customer service. Look at your salon’s amenities and see how you can elevate them. It’s the little things that mean the most
  • Follow up: After their appointment, follow up with an email to ask how they’re loving their hair, and with any products you may have talked about during your appointment.  It may be a small touch, but it makes a big impact.

4. Invest in Continuing Education

You already know this but, the beauty industry is always evolving. To stay ahead of the curve, you need to keep leveling up your tactical AND business skills. Education is an investment that always pays for itself.

  • Niche down: Define your niche and begin researching top courses that you dream of taking. Make a non-negotiable plan to invest in at least one course that will elevate your skills in 2025.
  • Don’t forget about business skills: Once you niche down, you need the business skills to grow properly. Without them, you risk losing profitability and burning out. Did you know that I have a course spilling all of my business profitability secrets? Check out Success Club here

5. Mindset is Everything

Last but not least, we gotta get your mind right. Building a business is hard work, and there will be ups and downs. If you stay focused and keep your eyes on the prize, there’s nothing you can’t achieve.

  • Believe in yourself: You’re talented, you’re capable, and you deserve all the success coming your way. Claim it!
  • Set goals: Whether it’s hitting a certain revenue target or booking more high-ticket clients, writing down your goals and reverse engineering them will keep you motivated.
  • Surround yourself with positivity: Build community with other hairstylists, listen to industry podcasts, read blogs (like this one 😉 ) and keep the faith that everything is working out for you.
